Onions on the grading belt

Size is one of the first questions an onion buyer asks. It decides what the onion is suited for and how much its processing costs. In this post we explain what size means, which ranges are in demand and how we match it to processing and packing.

What onion size means

Size is the onion's diameter in millimetres. The bigger the onion, the larger the size. Buyers order specific ranges, because their machines and processes are set up for them.

Which sizes for which use

SizeTypical use
40-60 mmsmaller onion, retail bags
50-70 mmthe most sought-after trade range
60-80 mmpeeling, catering
80+ mmprocessing, large size

Size for processing and packing

Processing and peeling like a large, even size, because that means fewer bulbs per tonne and higher peeling throughput. Packers for the retail trade more often take the 50-70 mm range. We grade onions for the specific customer, rather than sending out random goods. We write more about delivery formats and cooperation in our post on wholesale onions from Żuławy.

Size and trade class

Size is not the same as class. The trade class refers to quality and appearance (class I, II), while size refers to dimensions. The buyer usually specifies both. We rely on class I quality in the desired size.

How we match size on our farm

It starts in the field: even sowing and precise guidance give an even onion, so after grading we have more goods in the desired size. We then grade on the line and pack the chosen range. Where this even onion comes from is described in our post on growing in Żuławy, and how we keep quality after harvest in storing onions.
