We are a farm in Żuławy and a supplier of onions to packing companies and processing plants. We grow around 50 hectares of onions, we have our own store for about 1300 tonnes and an automated packing line. That lets us supply onions at a consistent quality and across most of the year, not just during the harvest season.
This post is for buyers: we explain what size and commercial grade mean, what we pack onions in and what cooperation looks like. No fluff: the specifics a B2B buyer is looking for.
What onion size is and what we offer
Size simply means the diameter of the onion in millimetres. Buyers order specific ranges, because the use depends on the size: one goes to retail chains, another to peeling, and yet another to processing.
| Size | Typical use |
|---|---|
| 40-60 mm | smaller onions, retail sacks |
| 50-70 mm | the most sought-after commercial range |
| 60-80 mm | large onions, peeling and food service |
| 80+ mm | very large size, processing |
We grade and sort onions to the buyer's needs. You will find the full offer of yellow and red onions on the onion offer and red onion pages.
Commercial grades of onions, what class I means
Onions on the market are divided into commercial grades according to a quality standard. In practice two matter: class I and class II.
| Grade | What it means |
|---|---|
| Class I | firm and compact onions, with no shooting into foliage, practically no roots, even, with the foliage trimmed |
| Class II | larger appearance defects allowed, while retaining usable qualities |
We aim for class I quality, because that is what large buyers expect. Every batch is selected for firmness, colour and a dry skin. We describe where this quality comes from in our post about growing onions in Żuławy.
What we pack onions in
We match the packaging format to the buyer and the logistics. Onions need breathable packaging, which is why we do not use plastic film.
| Packaging | For whom |
|---|---|
| Loose | processing, large packers |
| Big bag | wholesale transport, packers |
| Net bags (e.g. 25, 15, 10 kg) | distribution and retail |
We grade and pack on an automated line with a palletiser, which delivers consistent quality and fast turnaround on larger orders. We describe the equipment in the machinery section, and packing and storage in our guide to onion storage.
Onions for processing, peeling and freezing
Different uses have different requirements. For peeling and food service, a large, even size works well, for example the Hysinger F1 variety. For processing and freezing, the Redtide F1 red onion is a good fit. For long storage and steady supply we rely on firm yellow Rijnsburger-type varieties, such as Hybelle F1.
If you need onions for a specific process, tell us where they are headed and we will choose the variety and size.
The quality the market demands
Large buyers do not buy "blind". They demand documented quality, and we have it. We run the farm in line with the GlobalG.A.P. and GRASP certificates and the principles of Integrated Plant Production.
- GlobalG.A.P. is a standard of good agricultural practice, often a condition of cooperation set by retail chains and processors. It guarantees food safety and traceability.
- GRASP is an assessment of working conditions, an add-on to GlobalG.A.P.
- Integrated Plant Production is the controlled, careful use of plant protection products.
On top of that we test every batch for pesticide residues, heavy metals and substances hazardous to health. For the buyer that means peace of mind and compliance with their own customers' requirements.
For many chains and processors, GlobalG.A.P. is not an add-on but a condition of entry. We meet that condition from the field through to the store.
Availability across most of the year
A one-off delivery is not enough. What counts is continuity. Thanks to our own store for around 1300 tonnes, we do not sell the whole crop right after harvest, but supply onions across most of the year, at a steady quality. We explain how this works on the technical side in our guide to onion storage.
Why onions from Żuławy
Origin matters. Żuławy is a region of fertile alluvial soils, on which onions grow evenly and turn out firm, well-covered bulbs. Add to that our location in the Pomeranian region, near the Tricity, close to the ports and main routes, which eases the logistics of deliveries to northern Poland and for export.
In short: you get onions from a specific place and a specific farm, with a history and responsibility for quality, rather than anonymous produce off the exchange. We show how these onions are made in our post about growing in Żuławy.
Who we supply
Our vegetables reach market leaders such as Onix, Farm Frites and FreshPol, partners that supply the largest retail chains and processing plants in Poland and Europe. We also work on potatoes for processing, including the Innovator variety, which you will find in the potato offer.
For us this is proof that the quality and consistency of our deliveries are at the level large buyers expect.
Transport and delivery logistics
It is not just the produce that counts, but whether it arrives on time and in good condition. We prepare the onions on pallets, stacked by a palletiser, which speeds up loading and protects the packaging in transit. We set the delivery format and batch size around the buyer's logistics.
Onions for export
Polish onions hold a strong position in Europe, and markets such as Germany and the Netherlands regularly buy raw material from Poland. Our GlobalG.A.P. and GRASP certificates and consistent batch quality are exactly what foreign buyers expect. If you are interested in export delivery, get in touch and we will agree the terms and documentation.
How to order onions wholesale
Cooperation starts with a conversation about your needs: what size, what packaging format, what quantity and what timing. On request we send a free sample, so you can assess the produce before you decide.
Write or call through our contact page and we will work out the details. We calculate the price based on current market prices and the parameters of the order.
