Yellow Rijnsburger type onion, the Hysinger F1 variety

The variety is half the battle in growing onions. We rely on yellow Rijnsburger type onions in two proven varieties: Hybelle F1 and Hysinger F1. Both are firm, well skinned and suited to long storage, but they differ in the details. In this post we explain how they differ and which one to choose for what.

The Rijnsburger type in brief

Rijnsburger is an onion type with round bulbs, a firm straw-gold skin and very good storage life. That is why our entire onion programme is built on this type. We write more about it in our post on growing onions in Żuławy.

Hybelle F1, our lead variety

Hybelle F1 is our number one variety. It forms large, round onions wrapped in several layers of strong, straw-coloured skin. It stands out for above-average firmness and health, plus very good storage life: well managed, it can sit in the store until mid-June. It works for the fresh market and wherever long storage matters.

Hysinger F1, large size for peeling

Hysinger F1 is a variety with an exceptionally large size and a well-fitting, straw-coloured skin. The large, even onion is excellent for peeling and catering, where throughput counts. It also stores well.

Which one to choose for what

  • For long storage and the fresh market: Hybelle F1.
  • For peeling and catering, where large size counts: Hysinger F1.

You will find both in our onion offer. If you are after red onions, we have the Redtide F1 variety on the red onion page.

Variety and storage

The choice of variety translates directly into how long the onion will keep. Firm, well-skinned Rijnsburger type varieties withstand long storage far better than thin-skinned ones. How we use this in practice is described in our guide to storing onions.
